Formula Drift Round 4: The Gauntlet at Wall Speedway in NJ was another exciting event where the combination of the banking on the track and the competitive nature of the drivers pushed them to the limits. As a result a few of the vehicles were damaged in competition in dramatic fashion keeping them from advancing to the later rounds. The fans witnessed a true showing of world class drifting. Stay tuned for our very own coverage video. For more photos of the event Click Here!

Long Beach, Calif. – February 10th, 2011 – Formula DRIFT has announced that 2-time Formula DRIFT champion, Tanner Foust will temporarily step away from the sport of drifting. In conjunction, Papadakis Racing and Team Need For Speed have announced the signing of the 2010 Formula DRIFT Rookie of the Year, Fredric Aasbo.

“Tanner’s semi-retirement is bittersweet for the Series as he has become one of the most recognizable drivers on the circuit and is one of the most competitive spokesmen for Formula DRIFT,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “As with the growth and progression of the Series we can expect to see opportunities brought to many of the drivers and wish Tanner more success in his career both on and off the track. His departure will leave a spot open for a future star of drifting to rise, which we are excited to see.”

Foust has announced his temporary retirement from drifting due to a demanding 2011 schedule of European Rally events, X-Games and television responsibilities. The 2-time Formula DRIFT champion and Tires.com Triple Crown bonus winner will be competing one last time in the Rockstar / Papadakis Racing Scion tC on February 25, 2010 during the Formula DRIFT UAE Invitational competition.

“I owe a lot to Formula DRIFT and Stephan Papadakis. This sport, Stephan and his team have been, and will remain, an integral part of my motorsports life,” said Tanner Foust, from his home in San Juan Capistrano. “This was a hard choice to make, but with my schedule looking even busier than last year’s I will not be able to fully commit to the 2011 Formula DRIFT season. However, I am looking forward to competing in the Rockstar Scion tC for one last time in Abu Dhabi this month.” With an open seat, team owner, Stephan Papadakis has enlisted the highly touted and talented driver, Fredric Aasbo. In addition, a newly created partnership with Team Need For Speed has solidified the alliance. Aasbo will be competing in the brand new Need for 2011 Scion tC this season with the competition debut during Round 1: Streets of Long Beach on April 8-9, 2011.

“Our new partnership with Need For Speed and having Fredric behind the wheel of the new Need for Speed 2011 Scion tC is very exciting,” stated Stephan Papadakis, team owner of Papadakis Racing. “To be aligned with such a top brand in the gaming world is a dream of ours. The synergy between our programs is a natural fit. We build crazy cars for competition and they have the technology for the world to drive them! It has been a pleasure to work with Tanner for the past 5 years and our team thanks him for his hard work and determination and wish him nothing but the best.”

The 2011 Formula DRIFT season begins on April 8-9, 2011 and will mark the debut of many cars, drivers, and teams. For more information visit: www.formuladrift.com

Formula DRIFT and DIRECTV Team Up to Produce the World’s First Drifting Event in 3D

Long Beach, Calif. – Oct. 5, 2010 – Drift fans will want to buckle up for the DIRECTV broadcast of the world’s first drifting event in 3D. Produced by Formula DRIFT and DIRECTV, the program will focus on a series of battles from Formula DRIFT’s “Round 7, Title Fight” and will be aired exclusively on DIRECTV’s 3D channel, n3D, Powered by Panasonic, later this year.

“Formula DRIFT has always been on the forefront of technology,” said Ryan Sage, vice-president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “We were the first drifting series to provide HD television programming, live streaming event content via the DriftStream, and now we are adding 3D technology for our tech savvy audience.”

“3D is the perfect way to showcase what a Formula DRIFT event is all about,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “Drifting is a very visual motorsport with high-horsepower vehicles sliding sideways with precision, often inches from the wall and each other in dramatic fashion. 3D technology will capture all of the action and excitement and bring it directly into the living rooms of the fans.”

“DIRECTV customers may need bucket seats and a good harness when they sit down to watch the Formula DRIFT event in 3D, because it will be an exhilarating viewing experience,” said Chris Long, senior vice president, Entertainment, DIRECTV. “The drifting race event is a great opportunity to engage viewers with our exclusive n3D channel and show them why we’re so committed to 3D TV, and whet their appetite for more.”

DIRECTV’s exclusive 3D channel ,n3D powered by Panasonic, is available at no additional cost to millions of DIRECTV HD customers. In addition to the 2010 MLB All-Star Game, the NASCAR Coke Zero 400, and ESPN’s 3D coverage of the Summer X Games 16, n3D customers also have access to exclusive, original 3D programming such as “Guitar Center Sessions” with Peter Gabriel and Jane’s Addiction.

DIRECTV HD customers received a free software upgrade that enables them to have access to the 3D channels on DIRECTV. DIRECTV HD customers will need a 3D television set and 3D glasses to view 3D programming on DIRECTV.

Long Beach, Calif. – June 6, 2010 – Formula DRIFT continued the season at Wall Stadium for Round 3: The Gauntlet. Daijiro Yoshihara wins his second event in a row, while Vaughn Gittin, Jr. podiums for the third straight event and retains the Pro Championship leader

Wall Stadium hosted Round 3: The Gauntlet to a packed venue. Fans were treated to clear weather and an action-packed weekend. The level of competition has increased forcing multiple “One More Time” calls from the judges, which gave the fans more head to head action.

“The seventh season continues to be unbelievably strong with the depth and skill of the driver pool,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “We want to give it up the drivers for putting on another great show and to the fans for their continued support.”

Round 3: The Gauntlet showcased exciting tandem action that had Daijiro Yoshihara in the Discount Tire / Falken Tire Nissan S13 take his second consecutive victory by beating out Falken teammate Vaughn Gittin, Jr. in the Monster Energy / Falken Tires Ford Mustang in the Finals for the second time in a row. Gittin has now found the podium in each of the 3 events this season with a victory at Round 1 and two second place finishes at Round 2 and Round 3 and retains the Pro Championship points lead. The consolation round placed last season’s winner Darren McNamara in the Falken Tires Saturn Sky against 2-time Formula DRIFT champion Tanner Foust in the Rockstar Energy Drink Scion tC with Foust edging it out for third place at the event.

“I’ve got my mojo back!,” said Daijiro Yoshihara, winner of Round 3: The Gauntlet. “This feels incredible to win back to back events and I could not have done it without the help of my team and sponsors.”

The season continues on July 9-10, 2010 for Round 4: Throwdown at Evergreen Speedway. Tickets are available on-line. For more information and details visit the Formula DRIFT website at: www.formuladrift.com
